Renewable Energy Source (RES) is a type of clean energy available from the resources that are regenerated by natural processes. Among all RES wind energy is the most promising and highly growing energy resource. To achieve maximum power at every working pattern of the turbine, in spite of turbine inertia, the generator parameters are to be controlled effectively. A brief literature survey is conducted for horizontal axis type variable speed Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS). Numerous approaches and control techniques were implemented to obtain better efficiency in WECS. The complexity and time consumption involved in calculating the optimum turbine control parameters before implementing the control algorithm, justifies the need for determining the equivalent internal machine parameters. With respect to the type of generators, Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) and Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators (PMSG) are the highly preferred wind turbine generators. The generator compatibility of similar power rated DFIG and PMSG wind turbine systems are identified for a set of continuous real wind speed data at the geographical location 11.01°N latitude 76.97°E longitude. The electromagnetic torque performance for both turbine systems is simulated and compared. It is observed by regression analysis that, negative torque developed by PMSG closely follows the wind speed profile for low wind speeds, hence it is considered as compatible type of generator at that location. Further, the performance for similar power rated surface and interior type PMSG are investigated using experimental set up for tuning machine parameters to deliver maximum power. newline
