Abstract: Aluminium based ceramic reinforced metal matrix composites are the materials newlinebeing classified under advanced category and has been extensively used in modern newlineapplications of engineering due to its tailored engineering properties like high strength to newlineweight ratio, excellent tribological properties, superior mechanical properties, newlinereproductivity and low cost etc. The properties of ceramic reinforced aluminium metal matrix composites (AMMC s) mainly depend upon the quality of composites and method newlineused for synthesis of composites. For the development of high quality aluminium based newlinemetal matrix composites, liquid metallurgy is considered to be the most suitable newlinetechnique due to ease of manufacturing and low cost. AMMC s processed through liquid newlinemetallurgy method leads to various drawbacks with respect to non-homogeneity in newlinedispersion, reduced wettability of reinforcing phase in aluminium melt, poor bonding at the interface of reinforcing phase and the matrix, interfacial reaction existing between the ceramic phase and the matrix resulting with formation of reaction products and presence newlineof inherent casting defects. The manufacturing of composites through an in-situ method is a better substitute to overcome the drawbacks in synthesis of AMMC s.
