Abstract: ABSTRACT newlineTITLE: COMPARISON OF FUNCTIONAL AND RADIOLOGICAL newlineOUTCOME OF DIFFERENT METHODS OF SURGICAL newlineMANAGEMENT OF INTRA-ARTICULAR DISTAL RADIUS newlineFRACTURES BY OPEN REDUCTION, INTERNAL FIXATION AND newlinePLATE OSTEOSYNTHESIS VERSUS LIGAMENTOTAXIS newlineAIM: To analyze and compare the functional and radiological newlineoutcome of different methods of surgical management of intra - newlinearticular distal radius fractures in 50 patients treated by either open newlinereduction, internal fixation and plate osteosynthesis using distal newlineradius volar locking plate or by closed reduction and ligamentotaxis newlineusing external fixator with the addition of k wires. newlineMATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective interventional newlinestudy was conducted among 50 patients with distal radius intra - newlinearticular fracture, treated by either treated by either open reduction, newlineinternal fixation and plate osteosynthesis using distal radius volar newlinelocking plate or by closed reduction and ligamentotaxis using newlineexternal fixator with the addition of k wires if needed in our newlineinstitute between July 2017 and No vember 2019 over a period of 2 newlineyears and 5 months. newlineRESULTS: In our study, there were 43 male and 7 female patients, newlinemost of whom were in the age group 30-50 years (48%). The mode newlineof injury in most cases was RTA (Road traffic accident).Out of 50 newlinepatients, 25 were treated by Open reduction, internal fixation with newlineVolar locking compression plate and 24 were treated by Closed newlinereduction and external fixation augmented by K wire fixation newline(Ligamentotaxis). There was also found to be no significant newlinedifference in the radiological outcome in both groups of patients, i.e newlineRadial length (p=0.253), Palmar tilt (p=0.08), Radial inclination newline(p=0.075) and articular step-off (p=0.207). In terms of functional newlineoutcome of both procedures, only significant difference was found t o newlinein palmar flexion of the wrist joint (p=0.003) with better range of newlinepalmar flexion seen in the Open reduction and internal fixation with newlinevolar locking compression plate group.
