Abstract: | Scabies is one of the commonest skin diseases in under developed and newlinedeveloping countries. A detailed research is needed to evaluate the relative newlineefficacy and safety of the drugs. The common drug of choice is topical 5% newlinepermethrin. Various studies have reported that topical ivermectin is also newlineequally efficient in the treatment of scabies. newlineA total of 140 patients of either sex were enrolled in the study for a newlineperiod of two years. newlineThe study was a open labelled, randomized, comparative study. One newlinegroup treated with topical ivermectin (Group A) and the other with topical newlinepermethrin (Group B). Two follow up visits each two weeks intervals will be newlinenoted. At each follow up visit, Efficacy will be assessed upon the improvement newlineof lesions without the appearance of any new lesions from the initial visit and newlinereduced itching. Safety is assessed by the adverse drug reactions and newlinetolerability for the topical application of study drugs. newlineAfter completing both the follow ups, the overall improvement grading newlinescore was good with 89% in Group B(Permethrin) and 74% in Group newlineA(Ivermectin). Moderate improvement grading score was seen in 27% in newlineGroup B (Permethrin) and 11% in Group A(Ivermectin). 2% of study newlinepopulation showed mild improvement score in Group A (Ivermectin). This newlineobservation was statistically significant. newlinePermethrin shows a significant cure rate during the first follow up with newline94% clinical score and 74% itching score than Ivermectin which showed newlineclinical score 56% and itching score 64%. newlineNo adverse effects were observed in both the treatment groups. newlinePermethrin 5% cream is more effective than ivermectin 0.05% cream newlinedue to its ovicidal action. Both Permethrin 5% cream and Ivermectin 0.05% newlinecream are safe with no side effects. newline |
