Effectiveness of assistive technology for developing independent daily living skills among students with intellectual disability

Abstract

In present scenario, the goal of education is to enable students with intellectual disabilities to get suitable education which helps them attain better opportunities to reach upper level in the society as they deserve a life similar to other normal students. Individuals without disability can acquire daily living skills based on their developmental milestone but this is different in case of students with intellectual disabilities who depend on others for their daily living activities. It is thus very essential to provide them continuous training to improve their memory and cognitive skills. In this regard, assistive technology plays an important role in developing their skills. Implementing and using suitable assistive technologies to assist both students, parents and teachers for teaching, learning is an effective, cost-efficient strategy and its increased repetitive operation in class room as well as in home environments helps in the development of independent daily living skills for students with these problems. The research points out the potentials of assistive technology and hence becomes necessary to reconstruct or reframe the current curriculum to an integrated curriculum and becomes the responsibility of all the stakeholders to work together in developing a normal environment for such students also. newline
