Abstract: newline newlineABSTRACT newlineEnergy efficient clustering is an important step in many clustering applications newlinewhich relates wireless sensor networks (WSN) to the internet-of-things (IoTs). newlineNetwork lifetime evaluation becomes a challenging task in the absence of clustering or newlineheterogeneity. Models of cluster head selection have been used to develop different newlineenergy efficient clustering algorithms. Modeling the complete clustering for WSN-IoT newlineis a mammoth task. Instead, we here focus on the stability period and network lifetime newlinepart of the clustering system. newlineA literature survey on existing energy efficient clustering algorithms has been newlinecarried out in detail. The understanding of energy efficiency of a sensor network newlinerequires knowledge of the type of network field along with the variation in the initial newlineenergies and number of sensor nodes. This is determined by performance parameters newlinesuch as alive node metrics, stability period, instability period and network lifetime. newlineHowever, a more exhaustive model of energy efficient clustering may incorporate newlinemany additional parameters. There is a direct link between heterogeneity and different newlineenergies of sensor nodes which emphasizes the importance of lifetime as the most newlineimportant parameter in clustering. Thus a major part of this thesis is obviously newlinededicated to an energy efficient clustering of sensor networks for lifetime newlineenhancement of the system in hexagonal fields. We present the analysis of newlineheterogeneous clustering algorithms for small, medium and large scale networks newlinewhich are based on different types of sensor nodes. newlineThe main focus of this work is on heterogeneity followed by scalability in newlineclustering of WSN-IoTs. The details of the alive metrics used for benchmarking the newlineenergy efficient clustering algorithms are also presented showing the sub-periods of newlinelifetime. Major focus is initially offered to the aspect of cluster head selection, which newlineis the basis to build our first proposed heterogeneous broad transmission distance newlineprotocol (HT-BTDP)
