Abstract: | Abstract: Liver is one of the most important organ, which plays a provital role in regulating various physic ological processes in the body. It has great capacity to detoxicate toxic substances and synthesize useful principles. To investigate the hepatoprotective activity of hydroalcoholic extract of Lagerstroemia parviflora Roxb (L. parviflora) bark in CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity models in rats. Hepatotoxicity was induced in male Wistar rats by intraperitoneal injection of CCl4 (2ml/kg/day). Hydroalcoholic extracts of L. parviflora bark were administered to the experimental rats (100 and 200mg/kg/day, p.o.). The hepatoprotective effect of these extracts was evaluated by the change in body weight and assay of liver function biochemical parameters (SGPT, SGOT, alkaline phosphate (ALP), total protein (TP), malondialdehyde levels (MDA), serum bilirubin, total cholesterol and triglyceride) and histopathological studies of the liver. In hydroalcoholic extract-treated animals, the toxic effect of CCl4 was controlled significantly by restoration of the levels of serum bilirubin, protein and enzymes as compared to the normal and the standard drug silymarin-treated groups. Histology of the liver sections of the animals treated with the extracts showed the presence of normal hepatic cords, absence of necrosis and fatty infiltration, which further evidenced the hepatoprotective activity. The hydroalcoholic extract at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg, p.o. of L. parviflora bark have significant effect on the liver of CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity animal models. newlineKeywords: Lagerstroemia parviflora Roxb, Hepatoprotective activity, CCl4, Biochemical parameters, Histopathological studies. |
