N newlineEarly studies on experimental tooth movement have shown that the newlinesimultaneous administration of 1,25D and the application of mechanical force newlineinduce the formation of many osteoclasts and enhance bone resorption, newlineresulting in significantly faster rates of tooth movement than those produced by newlinemechanical force alone. This randomized control trial was performed to newlineunderstand the effect of the active form of vitamin D on the rate of orthodontic newlinetooth movement; and to understand and identify a serum vitamin D range for newlineoptimum orthodontic tooth movement. newlineMETHODOLOGY newlineThis study comprised of 80 arches, both maxilla and mandible divided into two newlinegroups: Group 1 being the conventional en-masse retraction mechanics without newlinethe use of systemic Vitamin D and Group 2 being en-masse retraction newlinemechanics with the use of systemic Vitamin D. All the arches were bonded up newlinewith 0.022 slot MBT/Damon 3MX bracket prescription. On completion of newlinelevelling and aligning, the participants were subjected to a blood profile to estimate the levels of Serum Vitamin D. The rate of space closure was measured newlineas the distance newlinetravelled, divided by the number of months in en-masse retraction. This was newlinerecorded in millimetres at seven different time intervals (T0-T6). Models and newlinephotographs were taken for each monthly appointment. newlineRESULTS newlineRate of space closure during en-masse retraction, without the use of Vitamin D, newlineamong the South Indian population is 2.5722±0.84mm and with the use of newlineVitamin D is 3.2589±0.89mm. An average increase of 0.6867±0.05mm/month in newlinethe rate of space closure is seen. The sum average rate of space closure in the newlineupper arch was 5.1789±1.891mm and lower arch was 4.6697±1.877mm. Anchor newlineloss of 0.7854±0.409mm was observed during the study period and was not newlinestatistically significant. A range of 27.975ng/dL to 39.175ng/dL of serum Vitamin newlineD is required for optimum orthodontic tooth movement. newline
