Abstract: | Background newlineA wide range of regenerative materials have been evaluated for the treatment of newlineintrabony defects in patients with chronic periodontitis. PRF has a clinically satisfactory newlineresponse when used in intrabony defects and melatonin, which is an endogenous newlinehormone also, has the potential of regenerating bone along with various other newlinephysiological functions. newlineAim newlineTo evaluate the adjunctive effect of melatonin with PRF against PRF alone in newlineperiodontal intrabony defects among patients with chronic periodontitis. newlineMaterials and Methods newlineIn this randomized controlled clinical trial, 17 bilateral intra-bony defects were treated newlineeither with melatonin + PRF (Group I) or PRF alone (Group II). Clinical and radiographic newlineparameters assessed were pocket depth, clinical attachment level and volume of bone newlinedefect at baseline and 6 months after intervention. Biochemical parameter assessed newlinewas alkaline phosphatase level at baseline and one month after intervention. newlineResults newline12 of 110 newlineThe melatonin + PRF group had statistically significant differences in all the parameters newlinefrom baseline to follow up. There was a good clinical improvement, however, the newlinestatistical difference between the groups was not present. newlineConclusion newlineWithin the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that the adjunctive effect of newlinemelatonin with PRF as a regenerative material in intrabony defects in patients with newlinechronic periodontitis is not present. However, there was a statistical difference within newlinethe group from baseline to follow up in all the parameters. Therefore, further studies newlinewith longer follow up period is required to assess the regenerative potential of newlinemelatonin newline |
