Abstract: Abstract newlineBackground newlinePeriodontitis is an inflammation of the supporting structures of the teeth newlineresulting from the interplay between the microorganisms present in dental newlineplaque and the host responses. Non-surgical periodontal therapy consists of newlinescaling and root planing and it is considered as the cornerstone of periodontal newlinetherapy. Deep pockets, presence of furcation involvement limit the advantage of newlinenonsurgical therapy, hence adjunct to therapy were introduced. Sonophoresis is newlinethe use of ultrasound to deliver topically applied drugs. It is a field in newlinepharmacology that is relatively unexplored in periodontics. newlineAim newlineTo evaluate the role of sonophoresis as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal newlinetherapy in patients with chronic periodontitis. newlineMaterials and methods newlineIn this parallel group RCT, 30 patients were randomized into 3 groups: Group A: newlineSRP, Group B: SRP+ topical metronidazole and Group C: SRP+ sonophoresis. newlineThe patients were evaluated for clinical parameters such as probing depth, newline10 of 87 newlineclinical attachment level, plaque index, bleeding index, bacterial colony forming newlineunits, and salivary MMP-8 levels at baseline and 1 month post treatment. newlineResults newlineAll groups showed significant reduction in all parameter s post treatment, newlinehowever, there was no statistically significant difference between groups post newlinetreatment. newlineConclusion newlineWithin the limitations of this study, we conclude that sonophoresis as an newlineadjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy offers an advantage over SRP in newlineterms of reduction of PI, PD, mBI, CFU. Future studies with a change in newlineultrasound frequency during sonophoresis and/or use of other drugs application newlinecould have promising results. newline newline
