Abstract: Desertion of indian brides by non-resident indian grooms is a socio-legal problem that newlinehas been consistently on the rise in india. the ministry of external affairs, india has newlinereceived several petitions from the aggrieved deserted women in the last few years on newlineharassment faced by them on foreign as well as indian soil at the hands of the nri newlinehusband or his family, bigamy committed by the nri husband, complete severance of newlinecommunication and ties by the nri husband, request for assistance in child custody newlinematters, maintenance and child support. as far as the statistics on the number of newlinedeserted women in india are concerned, there have been inadequate systematic newlinequantitative studies, thereby obviating the accurate assessment of such cases. the newlineministry of external affairs has received 6261 complaints from the abandoned women newlinefrom 2015 to 2019. similarly, the national commission for women has received 2,816 newlinecomplaints from 2015 to 2019. however, this is only an indicative number based on the newlinecomplaints received by the ministry and the commission, respectively, as there are newlineseveral cases that go unreported and are not taken into account. newlinethe issue of desertion of indian women by their nri husbands has been time and again newlinedealt with in both the houses of parliament. it has been a subject matter of several newlinestarred and unstarred questions asked by different members of the house and has been newlineraised in several parliamentary debates besides been a subject of sharp focus and study newlineby the various parliamentary committees. the fact that this issue has been deliberated newlinein parliament time and again helps in gauging the magnitude of the problem. newlinewhile there is significant judicial intervention and progress in the field of nri newlinemarriages in the form of progressive judgments safeguarding the rights of the ... newline
