Abstract: The lanthanide materials having luminescence properties are gaining popularity due to high photo-chemical and thermal stability, low cytotoxicity issue, resistance to photo bleaching, etc. Thus, it is of considerable interest to synthesize such luminescent materials which possess better photophysical properties covering a long range emission from visible to NIR region of electromagnetic spectrum with high value of photoluminescence lifetime. Among the lanthanide ions, visible light emitting Eu3+ ion is an important and versatile lanthanide ion. The oxidation state of europium is important in various applications because it shows different color emission in different oxidation states, as a trivalent ion it emits a red light and a blue light in the divalent form when used as a phosphor. Eu(III) complexes are known for their good photophysical properties such as high luminescent intensity, long luminescence life time ranging from micro- to miliseconds and high quantum yield. Bright red emission is obtained for Eu3+ ion as a consequence of efficient transfer of either through sensitizer in form of complex and as a doped ion in host lattice which serves important applications in the field of OLED fabrication, sensing, photocatalysis etc. The present research work aims at the synthesis of Eu(III) based luminescent materials, investigation of their photophysical properties and understanding the basic mechanism involving energy transfer which leads to sensitized emission.
