Abstract: Marital adjustment is defined as, the state in which there is an overall feeling between husband and wife, of happiness and satisfaction with their marriage and with each other. For several patients with chronic illnesses, marital relationship is a serious concern. It can directly affect the disease adjustment and the way they face disease outcomes and complications. The research indicates that marital problems and psychological disorders reciprocally influence one another. There is a strong association reported between alcohol abuse and marital distress. newlineAIM OF THE STUDY newline To study the Marital Adjustment in patients with Depressive Disorder and Alcohol Dependence Syndrome who are in Remission newline To study the quality of life in patients with Depressive Disorder and Alcohol Dependence Syndrome who are in remission. newline To study the correlation between Marital Adjustment and Quality of life in patients with Depressive Disorder and Alcohol Dependence Syndrome who are in Remission. newlineMaterial and Methods newlineThe study was performed on Patients attending Department of Psychiatry in Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute. All patients who satisfied the inclusion and exclusion criteria Informed consent, Socio-demographic and clinical details was obtained. SCID-1, Hamilton Depression rating Scale for Depression and AUDIT for Alcohol Dependence Syndrome was applied. WHO QOL-BREF Scale was used to assess quality of life. Marital Adjustment Questionnaire to assess marital adjustment was applied. newlineRESULTS newlineThe study showed that, in alcohol dependence syndrome patients there is a significant negative correlation between marital adjustment and various domains of WHO-Quality of life. In newlineDepressive disorder patients, results showed significant negative correlation between marital adjustment and various domains of WHO-Quality of life. newlineCONCLUSIONS newlinePatients with Alcohol dependence syndrome showed poor adjustment in relationships with spouses, and showed dissatisfaction and disinterest in the relationship. There is a presence of association of marital disadjustment in Depression in both males and females, irrespective of their severity of Depression. newline
