Abstract: With the enormous growth in multimedia applications and wireless network technologies, transmitting multimedia newlinedata over such network has now-a-days become a part of many applications like surveillance, environmental newlinemonitoring etc. But due to strict inherent limitations of such networks (e.g. WMSN, DTN) in terms of processing newlinepower, storage and bandwidth, multimedia data processing and its transmission over the wireless networks is very newlinechallenging. Further, energy is one of the scarcest resources in such networks, and therefore, saving energy is of newlineutmost importance. On the other hand, DTN has an additional challenge as the nodes communicate as long as newlinenodes remain in contact of each other. Due to mobility of the nodes, such contact duration may not be sufficient newlinefor the required multimedia data exchange. Also, a wireless network is vulnerable to security attacks where newlineconventional security solutions are computationally intensive and therefore not suitable for such energy-hungry newlinenetworks. In the present dissertation, all these are motivating factors for addressing the issues of multimedia data newlineprocessing and delivery over wireless networks. Precisely, in view of the fact that energy-starved nodes of these newlinenetworks prevent sophisticated multimedia processing while maintaining at least basic security features, attempt newlinehas been made to explore low-overhead and secure multimedia data compression technique as a solution towards newlinethis problem. newlineTo address the above challenges, a number of energy saving image compression schemes for WMSNs is proposed. newlineInitially a simple low overhead compression scheme using sub-sampling based technique for grayscale images newlineover WMSNs is developed. Next, a low-overhead compression scheme based on column drop (ICCD) is newlinedeveloped targeting to work on both colour and grayscale images and to improve reconstruction quality further. newlineIn order to overcome the limitation of using Bayer pattern in the column dropping technique, a new colour filter newlinearray to be installed suitably in resource-constra
