Abstract: | Computing systems are experiencing a complete paradigm shift. Earlier, sequential programming used to constitute an easy and effective way of coding applications on a single-processor platform and introduce parallelism newlineby multi threading extension. True parallel and distributed programming newlineused to constitute a domain reserved to only a relatively small number of newlineprogrammers dealing with High performance computing systems. However, newlinerecently multi-core systems, such as the Core i7 by Intel or the Phenom by newlineAMD and others, have become the de-facto standard for personal computing, from laptops to desktop computers. Multi-core processors are being newlineincreasingly used in the embedded domain as well. Furthermore, in the newlinecontext of high end processing environment, it is more and more common newlineto see multi-processor and multi-core (up to 8 - 12 core) systems. Processor manufactures are now putting more and more cores on single chip. newlineSome processors are already available for general purpose computing, such newlineas the 48 cores Single-Chip Cloud Computer (SCC) by Intel. Specialized newlineprocessors, such as the Azul Vega, go up to 54 cores, are exploring the newlinepossibility in this domain. Yet the mass market commercial exploitation of newlinethese processors will still take a few more years. newline |
