Abstract: | World Health Organization (WHO) defined natural menopause as the permanent stopping of menstruation proceed from the dropping of ovarian follicular activity . 12 months of consecutive amenorrhea is admitted to occur in natural menopause. Natural menopause is associated with unavoidable manifestations of the aging process in women. As estrogen levels drop, the estrogen/androgen ratio changes in biological time women result in lead to several age-related diseases like decreasing bone density, cardiovascular diseases, cognitive dysfunctions, and probably some cancers. The brain produces its own steroid hormone whereas circulating estrogen and C19 steroid precursors (substrate for estrogen synthesis) also can penetrate through the barrier (BBB) into the brain and supply the essential substrates for estrogen synthesis within the CNS. Brain estrogen local synthesis and activity become a lot independent from circulating sex hormone in nonreproductive females, like surgical or naturally menopausal women. As an example, in an earlier study, we showed that women with AD express the reduce activity of aromatase within the brain than that in age-matched women while not Alzheimer disease (AD). newline |
