dc.description.abstract | newline i newlineAbstract newlineThe thesis entitled An imprinting approach to design chitosan based sorbents for newlinesalicylic acid and cadmium highlights the designing of chitosan based imprinted polymers for newlinethe removal of salicylic acid (SA) / Cadmium (Cd) individually and simultaneously. India is the newlinethird largest producer of the fishery in the world. The major problem associated with the fish newlineprocessing industry is the generation of solid wastes that can be as high as 50-80% of the original newlineraw material. The management of this waste is very important as it has high biological oxygen newlinedemand and if not managed properly, can pose environmental problems. The sustainable solution newlineto this problem can be the generation of value added products such as chitin and chitosan from newlinethe fish processing industry waste and its further use for various applications. The utilization of newlineby-products not only provides cleaner production opportunity for the industry, but also generates newlineadditional revenue as well as reduces disposal cost for this waste. With this view, the use of newlinechitosan for water remediation can be beneficial in resolving the problem of pollution caused by newlinethe fish processing industry waste under the policy of wealth from waste . newlineChitosan is a natural amino polymer. It is eco-friendly, biocompatible, biodegradable, newlinecost-effective, easily available and has high potential to be utilized as an adsorbent. One of the newlinemost important advantages of chitosan is its versatility and hence can readily be modified either newlinephysically or chemically. Chitosan have a variety of potential applications in the areas of newlinebiotechnology, biomedicine, and food ingredients and has been reported as the most useful newlinebiopolymers with high potential for the sorption of toxic metal ions, dyes, phenol, newlinepolychlorinated biphenyls and oil etc. Because of their excellent chelating power, chitosan-based newlineadsorbents have a very high ability to tightly bind the heavy metal and organic pollutants present newlinein contaminated water and wastewater. newlineP | |
