Abstract: | The present study is an attempt to provide comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon of Gujjar identity in contemporary Punjab. The study primarily explores the patterns of identity formation and political participation among the Gujjar community. Based on in-depth analysis of the objectives, functioning, nature, and different dimensions of the varied socio-religious intuitions and organizations of the Gujjar community, the study argues that they provide the ground for the articulation of exclusive Gujjar identity and also plays a significant role to secure and strengthen their identity in the politics. The question of the Gujjar identity largely revolved around the axis of these institutions. It further argues that the mobilisation of the Gujjar community is effected by providing direct and indirect patronage to these socio-religious institutions and by inserting political dimension to their ethno-communal/religious nature. The pattern of their political participation shows that the Gujjar community actively takes part in politics and their participation is not only confined to traditional political activities. They also use non-traditional ways to become a part of politics. The study reveals that their concerns, issues, interests, and problems shape their political behaviour and attitude. The nature of their participation is dynamic and largely influenced by the interests of their community. Their socio-economic conditions and other factors also impact their identity formation process and political participation. The study concludes that although the assertion of the Gujjar community is currently at an emerging stage but sooner it would be having a significant impact on the politics of Punjab. newline |
