Abstract: Aam Aadmi Party as a niche party in its origin appeared to promise an alternative mode of politics. The exceptionalism of the party emerges from the following factors: it being led and supported overwhelmingly by the urban middle classes; it being formed not out of any older party; difficulty in bracketing the party into neat categories of national/regional; secular /religious; conservative/radical; its conscious effort to reach out to larger electorates cutting across long-established patterns of partisan social alignment/ cleavages. newline
