Abstract: The classification of books for children and adults has compelled the teen newlinereaders to leap from children s literature to adults literature. With the emergence of newlineadolescence, a distinct literature was created and young adult literature became an newlineumbrella term for various genres that met the predilection of the young adult readers. newlineThe term young adult literature found its common usage in the late 1960s; the interest newlineof the growing readers has been marked by their change of interest in the book they read newlinefrom adventure/fantasy to thriller/mysteries. There are opinions that the preferences of newlinebooks are of individual choices and there is no fixed genre in literature for certain age newlinegroups. It is still undeniable that the behaviourism of a certain age group is almost newlinethe same regardless of nationality, culture and class. Unlike other genres, young adult newlineliterature was not developed by critics but by the librarians and publishers. newlineAs young adult literature seems to shelter simple writing style, there is a view newlinethat young adult literature does not need much attention and offers enough substance to newlineinclude it within the traditional literary canon. An opinion also exists that young adult newlineliterature is not a creative response to the needs of society but one that is born out of newlinemarket need. There might be a politics of suspicion influenced by culture and economy. newlineYoung adult literature has gained momentum in many countries and its boom in India newlineis attested by news items, articles and institutional awards. The growth of young adult newlineliterature in India is quite distinct. There are several classic and contemporary English newlineand regional language writers whose writings are read a lot by the young adults. newlineThere is a flair for the subject and theme handled in contemporary Indian newlineyoung adult literature but it is radically free from the tangles of moral and ethical issues newlinecompared to western young adult literature.
