Renewable biofuels have attracted worldwide attention over the past decade and it is imperative that biofuels be noticed to accelerate developments. It is noticed that the conversion of agricultural waste into second generation ethanol has opened the door to unused resources and has promoted environmental sustainability. The second generation ethanol, made from agricultural residues, offers significant prospective due to the extensive accessibility, abundance and comparatively inexpensive biomass. The use of agricultural waste to produce second generation ethanol is proving to be a substitute source of energy for a narrow range of nonrenewable energy and food crops. The use of ethanol blended with diesel fuel has recently attracted the attention of many researchers. This study presents the utility of second generation ethanol blended with diesel fuel in a multi-cylinder automotive CRDI diesel engine. The fuel blends were prepared in different proportions of second generation ethanol in diesel fuel, out of which fuel blends with 7%, 13%, and 19% of second generation ethanol was found stable based on miscibility with diesel fuel. The physical and chemical properties of blended diesel fuel with second generation ethanol were evaluated before its application to compression ignition engine. The assessed fuel properties were density, kinematic viscosity, Cetane number, calorific value, sulfur content and flash point for the prepared blends with respect to fuel quality standards. Tested second generation ethanol blended diesel fuel displayed comparable properties values to those of pure diesel fuel. The study includes an incisive discussion on the feasible effects of fuel property variation with second generation ethanol-blended diesel fuel concentration. Further, a multi-cylinder automotive CRDI diesel engine was operated to evaluate the perf |
