Abstract: | newlineQuality education is the most cherished goal in the field of education. Performance of newlinethe child may be treated as the indicator of quality. Many researches have shown that newlinelearnerand#8223;s participation and achievement in schools depends on number of factors related newlineto family and school of the child. In school related factors some important factors which newlineinfluence quality include teaching learning practices, use of teaching- learning material newlineand teacherand#8223;s knowledge among others. It is evident that the school related factors newlinedepend most on teachers. As stated by National Policy on Education (1986), The status newlineof the teacher reflects social cultural ethos of a society, it is said that no people can rise newlineabove the level of its teachers . In todayand#8223;s time where global and local needs are newlinechanging at a fast pace due to knowledge explosion and technology teacherand#8223;s teaching newlineand learning is of profound importance. Teachers now have to perform new roles of newlinefacilitator, mentor etc. who is cognisant of child behaviour, his learning needs and new newlinedevelopments in society leading to new demands in learning. To perform these roles it newlineis imperative that the teachers are prepared professionally. Teacher education newlineprogramme develops the knowledge, abilities and the skills, which are required by newlineteacher. So, for a well grounded education system effective teacher preparation newlineprogramme becomes a pre-requisite. In India various teacher education programmes newlineexist with their rationale, philosophy and ideology that may vary from each other, newlineleading to different mindsets which reflects in their teaching-learning.
