Abstract: | Research on bioprospecting and bioprocessing of halophilic newlinebacteria has grown exponentially due to easy access and creatable newlinehypersaline ecosystems. Halophilic bacteria play an essential role in newlinedifferent industrial sectors, including agriculture, medicine, industrial newlineenzymes, food processing, bioremediation, etc. The Marakkanam salt newlinepan in South India is characterized by a harsh environment, including newlinehigh salinity fluctuation, radiations, metals, and minerals content. Thus, newlineduring my Ph.D. research, I have studied the bacterial community of the newlineMarakkanam salt pan and investigated their potentials for newlinebiotechnological applications. newlineIn the first part of the study, cultivable and uncultivable newlinehalophilic bacteria inhabiting the Marakkanam salt pan were newlinecharacterized. A total of nine bacterial strains were isolated, identified, newlineand phylogenetically characterized using a 16S rRNA gene sequence. newlineOut of these, five isolates showed resemblance to the newlineChromohalobacter sp., two to the Halovibrio sp., and one each to the newlineSalinivibrio sp. and Staphylococcus sp., respectively. All isolates could newlineix newlineproduce lipase and protease, but only Salinivibrio showed cellulase newlineproduction. All strains were tolerant to heavy metals, including cobalt, newlinelead, arsenic, zinc, copper, chromium, and mercury, but showed silver newlinesensitivity. Three isolates (Chromohalobacter spp. and Salinivibrio sp.) newlinecould grow on crude oil. Both the isolates belonging to Halovibrio sp. newlineexhibited the property of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification newlineactivity along with anti-vibrio activity, suggesting their potential for newlineusages in the aquaculture industry. Un-cultivable bacteria analyzed newlineusing MinION sequencing showed the presence of at least eight newlinebacterial phyla belonging to fifty-five genera. An abundance of class and#946;- newlineproteobacteria (59%) was observed in this study. |
