The growing demand for high data rate wireless communications newlinehas motivated communication engineers to develop high speed data newlinecommunication while trying to retain backward compatibility with the newlineexisting systems In order to mitigate the effects of wireless channel newlineimpairments like multi path fading inter symbol interference and co channel newlineinterference multiple antennas are employed at the transmitter and receiver to newlineimprove the performance of the system both in terms of reliability and newlineincreased throughput newlineSpace time wireless technology that uses multiple antennas along newlinewith appropriate signaling and receiving techniques offers a powerful tool for newlineimproving wireless performance In a broader sense space time coding and newlinespatial multiplexing the two major implementations of open loop MIMO newlinepromises to be the attractive solutions for high data rate wireless newlinecommunication Like Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing OFDM newlinespace time coding is a promising candidate for high data rate applications newlinewhich is included in the physical layer of advanced mobile standards newlineSpace time coding essentially a joint design of coding, modulation newlinetransmit diversity and receive diversity is available in two kinds namely newlineSpace Time Block Codes STBC and Space Time Trellis Codes STTC newlineThe key advantage of STTC over STBC is that they provide coding gain newlinealong with the provision of full diversity whereas the latter provide diversity newlinegain along with a very simple decoding scheme Spatial multiplexing newlinetechniques like Bell Labs Layered Space Time Architecture BLAST provide newlinehigh multiplexing gain and little or no diversity gain newlineen_US
