Evaluation of Er Cr SGG laser assisted flap surgery and conventional flap surgery a randomized clinical split mouth trial

Abstract

Aim newlineThe aim of the present study was to compare and evaluate the efficacy of newlineEr,Cr:YSGG laser assisted open flap debridement surgery with conventional open newlineflap debridement surgery in subjects with Chronic Periodontitis. newlineMaterials and Methods newlineIn this randomized controlled clinical split mouth trial 12 patients were included newlinediagnosed with generalized chronic periodontitis. The test group underwent newlineEr,Cr:YSGG assisted laser open flap debridement where control group was newlinetreated with conventional open flap debridement. Clinical parameters and newlinemicrobiological parameters were checked at baseline and 6 months newlinepostoperatively. newlineResults newlineBoth the study groups showed statistically significant differences in all the newlineparameters from baseline to follow-up. However, test group (laser group) showed newlinestatistically significant improvement in plaque index, gingival index, early healing newlineindex, and Rt-PCR values for P. gingivalis and T. forsythia at follow up newlineappointment. newlineConclusion newlineAlthough no significant results were obtained in probing depth and clinical attachment newlinelevel the difference between both the groups was minimal. Within the limits of this study it newlinecan be safely concluded that Er,Cr:YSGG laser can be effectively used as an adjunct with newlinethe conventional open flap debridement.
