Abstract: The field experiment was carried out at soil conservation and water management form of C.S. Azad University of agriculture and technology Kanpur during ravi seasons of 2017-18 and 2018-19 to assess the effect Productivity, water use efficiency and economics of barley (Hardeum vulgare L.) based cropping system as influenced by integrated nutrient management under rainfed condition . The treatments consist of seven cropping systems i.e. (i) barley sole, 25 cm apart (ii) lentil sole, 25cm apart (iii) chickpea sole, 50cm apart (iv) barley + lentil, (2:1) (v) barley + lentil (4:1) (vi) barley + chickpea (2:1) (vii) barley + chickpea (4:1) and 3 integrated nutrient management i.e. (i) RDF (ii) 75% RDN + 25% N through FYM and (iii) 75% RDN + 25% N through FYM + seed treatment with culture + PSB were tested in the experiment. The experiment was conducted in split plot design replicated three times keeping cropping systems in main plot and INM in sub plot. The intercropping system of barley + chickpea (4:1) gave significantly maximum (34.52 and 36.52 q ha-1) barley equivalent grain yield, land equivalent ratio and earned maximum net return of Rs. 35756 and 39910 ha-1. Regarding water use efficiency, the treatment of barley + chickpea (4:1) showed highest value 14.2 and 14.8 kg seed ha-1mm-1 of water being most efficient cropping system. The application of 75% RDN + 25% N through FYM + culture + PSB further improved the water use efficiency. The highest net return of Rs 35756 and 39910 was recorded in the treatment of barley + chickpea (4:1) exhibiting the commercially superior over the sole cropping in first and second year respectively moreover maximum respectively. Moreover maximum C:B ratio of (4:1) was recorded in the above treatment the increasing levels of INM application showed increasing values of these parameters including C:B ratio newline
