Abstract: The work carried out in my research tenure has been compiled in the form of a thesis entitled Design, synthesis and in vitro cytotoxicity evaluation of and#946;-carboline/indole based hybrids: construction and functionalization of and#946;-carbolines . This thesis comprises the identification of an efficient and biocompatible catalyst (Alginic Acid) for Pictet-Spengler synthesis of tetrahydro-and#946;-carbolines and tetrahydro-isoquinolines. It also includes catalyst-free site-selective diverse functionalization of inherent C H bonds in 1-aryl-and#946;-carbolines using eco-friendly reagents. Apart from this, the aim of work is to design, synthesize novel and#946;-carboline/indole tethered scaffolds by means of molecular hybridization, and evaluate their cytotoxicity potential and mechanism of action such as DNA intercalative binding affinity, inhibition of topoisomerases and inhibition of tubulin polymerization. newline
