dc.description.abstract | Ayurveda, The science of longevity, promotes positive health and long life. Although newlinerooted in antiquity, Ayurveda is based on universal principles and is regarded a living, newlinegrowing body of knowledge and is as useful today as it was in the centuries past. newline Kaumarbhritya (Ayurvedic Pediatrics) is one of the eight major divisions of newlineAshtanga Ayurveda1 newline. Apart from treatment of childhood disorders as the name indicates it newlinegives more emphasis on the care of newborn and on the proper upbringing of children2 newline. Care of newlinenewborn (Jaatmatra paricharya) in Ayurveda includes mukh-kantha vishodhan, bala tail newlineabhyanga, jaatkarma samskara, pran pratyagamana and nabhinal chedana (Umbilical cord newlinecutting and cord care) newline At the time of birth, the newborn is attached to the mother through the umbilical newlinecord, which is a part of the placenta. The infant is separated from the placenta by catching the newlineumbilical cord between two clamps. One clamp is applied close to the infant s navel and the newlinesecond clamp is placed further along the cord. The cord is cut between the two clamps. This newlinetakes place during the third stage of labour, which is the period from birth of the infant until newlinethe delivery of the placenta. The umbilical cord is the baby s connection to the mother in the newlinewomb. After birth, the cord is cut, and the stump remains attached to the baby. It usually falls newlineoff within a few days. newline | |
