dc.description.abstract | When mass industrialization became the order of the day during the Second World War, the need for superior materials with a high strength-to-weight ratio became a compelling demand. Research investigations were conducted in all possible ways of developing new materials. Initially, the material strength was improved by adding the alloying element. However, alloys have their limitations in the form of solubility limits. Hence, composite materials were a new school of thought that originated as a result of the segregation of alloying elements from the solvent metal, owing to insolubility. The new methods for manufacturing composites were developed to enhance the mechanical properties at optimal cost, and applications of those composites were low in the automobile and aerospace industries. The innovation in composites was also developed in the 20th century, which was suitable for both the automobile and aerospace industries. newlineAluminium Metal Matrix Composites (AMMCs) are widely replacing high-density materials in many industrial applications, owing to their high strength-to-weight ratio. Generally, in AMMCs, the research has been focused only on adding the conventional reinforcements like SiC, Al2O3, TiC, B4C, Si3N4, TiB2 to the Al alloy. The usage of reinforcement particles obtained from industrial waste is scant. Also, only a few researches are carried out for studying the tribological behaviour at an elevated temperature. Crushed Rock Sand (CRS) is a hard-solid waste, which is obtained while crushing the rock into tinier pieces for construction purposes. The SiO2 and Al2O3 are rich in CRS, which serves as a partial substitute for conventional reinforcements to develop metal matrix composites newline | |
