Abstract: | Heavy traffic and material scarcity have pushed the researchers to develop economic newlineand sustainable methods of pavement design. Construction of perpetual or long life newlinepavements may be considered a step in this direction. These pavements are designed to newlinelast more than 50 years without requiring any structural rehabilitation or reconstruction, newlinehowever, periodic maintenance is insured to improve the functional performance. The newlinedesign methodology is based on the idea of endurance limit (EL) of the pavement newlinematerials, which is a threshold value in terms of stress or strain, below which pavement newlinewould have a very long life. Countries like US, UK, China and Israel etc. have been newlinesuccessfully designing and constructing full depth asphalt pavements as long life newlinepavements. Full depth asphalt pavements have proven to be economical compared to newlineconventional pavements in terms of life-cycle cost, but the heavy consumption of costly newlinepavement materials (i.e. aggregates and asphalt) is causing hindrance to its acceptance newlinein developing countries like India. Also, the project cost increases many fold when large newlineamount good quality aggregates are to be transported from faraway places. newline |
