The demand for clean and economical energy sources is increasing exponentially due newlineto the rise in environmental pollution level by the conventional sources, depletion of the newlinetraditional sources and continuous increase in the energy demand over the years. Therefore, newlinerenewable and green energy sources such as solar panels, wind turbines, fuel cell, and newlinebiomass are becoming more popular which address the solution to these problems. The newlineintegration of renewable sources or distributed generation (DG) sources to the existing newlinepower distribution network introduced the revolutionary concept of the microgrid. A newlinemicrogrid is a group of interconnected DGs, controllable loads and storage devices which newlineoperates as a single controlled entity within the centralized grid. Further, the microgrid can newlineoperate in conjunction with the main grid in grid-connected mode and share the load newlinedemands or it can operate autonomously in islanding mode to supply the local loads. The newlineoperating condition and network topology of the microgrid may vary according to the newlinetechnical and economic requirements. The operation and controlling principle of the newlinemicrogrid is different from the existing power distribution grid and brings serious newlineprotection challenges.
