Train Scheduling and Rescheduling for the Indian Railway Network

Abstract

Various countries are working to improve the efficiency of the railway industry and make better use of the available infrastructure capacity. Increased passenger demand and traffic volume have resulted in reports of capacity issues, which have resulted in trains operating in an irregular manner. Because of a disruption in the rail traffic network, it is expected that the initial timetable will need to be adjusted and trains will need to be rescheduled for new time slots. It is necessary to schedule trains in order to minimize the impact of any variation from the original railway traffic timetable on train traffic, which is characterized as a disruption. To overcome the above-mentioned challenge, railway management needs a quick and optimal strategy for obtaining an efficient solution to the problem. The application of operational research tools, particularly scheduling approaches, to train operation and control difficulties has a significant potential for generating algorithmic solutions. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and analyse the restrictions associated with scheduling and rescheduling in the context of the Indian railway traffic system. Aside from that, the study analyses how different scheduling systems deal with and model restrictions in a variety of situations.
