Abstract: Diesel engines were widely preferred in the industrial sector, automotive sector and agricultural applications due to their higher thermal efficiency and durability. In upcoming years, this dependency is increasing with rapid depletion of fossil fuel reserves, escalating fuel prices, concerns of environmental emission by combustion of hydrocarbon fuel. Various alternative fuels like oxygenated fuels (esters, ethers and alcohol), synthetic oils (coal, natural gas, and biomass fuel and waste plastic oils), gaseous fuels (H2 gas, methane gas, coal, natural gas, LPG). Among various alcohols available, extensive research was carried out with methanol, ethanol, bio-ethanol and butanol for reducing the dependency of fossil fuel reserves [6-13] and these alcohols were found effective in lowering the exhaust emissions. newline
