Abstract: | Electric traction has one of most challenging areas of modern technologies. Among the different methods of electric tractions, traction drives on railway sector has discussed in this thesis. Research on the railway sector is one of the fast-growing technological development in the world. Especially on Indian railways holds the 4th position as the biggest rail network around the world. Various Research is going on Indian railway such as Vehicle Dynamics, Energy Efficient Traction Power Supply Systems, High-Speed Technologies, Heavy Haul Technology, Track Research, etc. For high-speed technologies, various areas of engineering contribute substantial importance such as mechanical designs for bogies, aerodynamic front view of the locomotive for the reduction of air friction, etc. should be considered. In this thesis especially for the technological development of rolling stock or electric locomotives for high speed, rails projects are discussed in detail. The conventional electric engine means it is purely electric motors powered locomotive, there are no internal combustion engines fixed inside the locomotives. The conventional electric locomotives carry a large locomotive transformer or Line frequency transformer inside the locomotive to step down the high voltage overhead line voltage to suitable load voltage. The drawback of conventional electric locomotive is the transformer holds the major weight contributor of the electric locomotive because its operating frequency is low, because of this reason locomotive runs with a limited speed only. newline |
