Abstract: | Motors drive all the appliances. There are two types of motors namely motors with brushes and brushless motors. Electromagnet in the two poles is implemented by the armature of the brushed DC motor and the mechanical rotation of the motor is achieved with the commutator. But for the brushless DC motor the external rotor is achieved with the permanent magnet driving the coil at its three phases and some sensors tracking the rotor position. Brushed motors are used in automobile and household electrical appliances because of its very simple controller design and low cost for construction. Both the motors work in the same way, but there is difference in its design, executing behaviour and the way of control in its implementation. Furthermore, the correct design of motor is an important parameter in the performance evaluation of any electrical appliance. Nowadays the brushless motors have replaced the brushed DC motors in many of the industrial, household and electrical vehicles. This is because of the reliability and its operating efficiency at variable speeds. newlineBLDC motors are used in automotive electric vehicles, washing machine, fan, printers, computer peripheral drives and high voltage AC systems because of power, size, speed/torque characteristics, dynamic response, noiseless operation and higher speed ranges. The commutator is substituted by electronic devices that enhance the reliability and durability of the system. Another advantage of a BLDC motor is that it can be made smaller and lighter than the traditional motor which has the same power output, thus making the BLDC motor more suitable for applications where space is scarce. The reliability and efficiency of BLDC motor are improved by eliminating the source of wear, tear and power loss due to heating. The ratio of torque delivered relative to the size of motor is higher, and hence it is a good choice for applications such as washing machines and electric vehicles, where high power is needed. The performance of BLDC motor is mainly dependent on the converter, inverter and voltage/current loop controller of the motor drive. newline |
