Abstract: newline The increase in high bandwidth applications such as advanced Internet of things (IOT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), distributive and cloud computing, coupled with increase in number of online users and live streaming requirements is resulting in growth of internet traffic at the rate of exabytes per month. The traditional direct modulation in single mode optical networks is limited to a maximum of 10 Gbps per channel due to chirping and dispersion. Catering to the current demands for high dynamic bandwidth requirement, within the limitation imposed by available spectral bandwidth, requires flexible bandwidth allocation schemes to meet the elastic nature of these demands while keeping the operational and capital expenditures low. Flexible bandwidth provisioning can be generally divided into two types. The first type, common to RF/microwave and access optical networks, relates to the requirement of providing active control of distribution of incoming data to two or more channels simultaneously as required. newline newline
