dc.description.abstractSpace frame structures are well known in the building industry newlinewhich gives an effective solution to cover the large areas with few or no newlineintermittent supports In spite of the advantages many times space structures newlineexperience sudden and progressive collapse caused by buckling of critical newlinecompression chord members The present study primarily aims at alleviating newlinethis phenomenon using steel and steel concrete composites The scope of the newlinethesis encompasses numerical simulation of post buckling behaviour of the newlinespace trusses study on suitability of nodes and deck slab parametric newlinestudy on the steel and composite space structures for design optimization newline experimental study on the composite slab and on the steel space newlineframe structure and composite space frame structure In the numerical newlineformulation, geometrically nonlinear finite element formulations are derived newlinein the co rotated updated Lagrangian format The rigid body displacements newlineare handled through the nonlinear transformation matrices and the strain newlineproducing deformations are handled using material compliance relations newlineA parametric study on the various factors affecting the behavior of the space newlinestructures using a standard finite element package is carried out and the newlineparameters includes length of shear connector effect of slab thickness newline support arrangement and space truss systems with and without newlineconcrete slab at the top newlineA series of experiments on the composite slab with a mechanical newlineshear connector is conducted newline newlineen_US
