PREHISTORIC TOOL TECHNOLOGY in ODISHA PALAEOLITHIC TO NEOLITHIC PERIOD

Abstract

The emergence of prehistoric archaeology in Odisha was occurred during 19th century A.D. with the work of V. Ball. All over India antiquarianism was the characteristic feature of archaeology until the early part of 19th century A.D. This study was mostly confined to sacred living monuments of Odisha. Till the close of 19th century some scholars focused their attention this phase the work on Odishan Prehistory was started along with the attempt of Valentine Ball, a geologist who was responsible to lay the foundation for Prehistoric studies in Odisha. For the first time he reported Palaeolithic artefacts from four places at Angul, Talcher, Dhenkanal and Bursapalli in 1876. Half a century later Paramananda Acharya reported Neolithic artefacts from his native village Baidyapur in Mayurbhanj, northern Odisha. However all the credit goes to R.D. Banerji who for the first time incorporated prehistoric studies in Odisha as a part of history of Odisha. During the late thirties E. C. Worman, a Howard University researcher, and Paramananda Acharya explored the Palaeolithic sites of Kuliana and Kamarpara in Mayurbhan
