Abstract: Future automobiles, as well as intelligent transportation in general, will rely heavily newlineon vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). Vehicular communications provide newlinevarious services ranging from safety to infotainment services. In VANETs, safety newlineservices are given priority; but from the commercial side, infotainment services newlinegained importance by providing comfortable driving experiences to the passengers newlinewithout compromising on safety. However, ensuring efficient infotainment message newlinedissemination is challenging in VANETs due to the vast volume of infotainment data newlinetransmitted through wireless channels with restricted bandwidth. Also, in VANETs, newlinethe channel parameters vary due to mobile vehicular conditions. Therefore, efficient newlineutilization of the bandwidth while ensuring the required error performance is a critical newlineissue in the infotainment message dissemination. For infotainment applications newlinewhere most users require high bandwidth, the collaborative approaches for data newlinebroadcasting with a dedicated spectrum are generally preferred. This preference is newlinedue to congestion in the licensed spectrum or limited network coverage in remote newlineareas, resulting in a reduced aggregate data rate. Still, when collaborative message newlinedissemination is not possible, the receivers must rely on the cellular network to meet newlinetheir demands. newlineThis work addresses the problems associated with efficient infotainment message newlinedissemination. A typical message dissemination scenario in VANETs is considered, newlinewhere all the vehicles in a group demand a common file of considerable size. The data newlinepackets are initially broadcasted from the roadside unit (RSU) to the vehicles, and newlineeach vehicle receives a part of the file. This phase of infotainment data dissemination newlineis known as the R2V phase. After leaving the range of an RSU, there are two newlineapproaches through which each vehicle gets the remaining part of the file other than newlinethat it received from the RSU.
