dc.description.abstractBackground and Objective: A significant proportion of the population has undergone one or the other forms of surgical procedures at one or more points in the life time of an individual. Surgery has become an integral part of global health care. Abdominal surgery refers to any surgical operation on abdominal organs for a variety of reasons, including infection, obstruction, tumors or inflammatory bowel disease. Abdominal surgery includes a surgical repair, resection or reconstruction inside the abdominal cavity. Depending upon type of surgery and type of incision there are chances that patient might develop complications like bleeding, infection, incisional hernia, pain, increased intra-abdominal compartment pressure, poor cosmesis and postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). Abdominal wall paresis is a complication of laparotomy surgery due to lesions of the intercostal nerves in which after subcostal laparotomy, paresis of the rectus abdominis muscle and bulging of the abdominal wall. The purpose is to center attention on the problems associated with exaggerated parietal wall pain. Strength of abdominal muscles falls to lower levels after major abdominal surgery and their postoperative recovery of strength is impaired. There is lack of literary evidence in published studies performed among patients who have undergone abdominal surgical procedures among Indian population, especially related to abdominal strength and pain in particular post operative physiotherapy. Aim of this study was to assess effectiveness of respiratory exercises and abdominal muscle strength training program on pain, activities of daily living (ADL) and quality of life (QOL) in patients of post-operative abdominal surgeries.
