Abstract

The central purpose of this study is to give a broad account of the history of public health in Orissa during the first six decades of twentieth century. While examining some of the aspects of public health in the context of Orissa, the study seeks to examine the basic nature of both colonial and post-colonial policies on public health and the associated acts. The study begins with a brief analysis of the history of the growth of the modern public health system specifically looking at the forces and factors which went into the shaping of the very system. newlineThe present work entitled Public Health in Orissa, 1900-1961 primarily deals with three important aspects, such as, disease, public health policy and institution or health care centers in the context of Orissa during colonial and post-colonial period. It examines the British medical or health care policy and public health measures towards preventing epidemic diseases in Orissa during a time frame of six decades. The present study seeks to probe the gradual development of public health administration, measures in connection with combating epidemic diseases, sanitary initiatives and measures undertaken by the government during the time of fairs of festival.
