Abstract: | The relevant recent studies and reports on climate change across societies suggest: climate change is a global phenomenon; the developing societies are likely to be disproportionately affected; the living and livelihood of the population in coastal areas are most vulnerable. India is vulnerable to climate change for three major reasons: first; dependence on nature-based livelihood; second; long inhabited coastline exposed to extreme weather events; and third; poor coping ability. newlineClimate change is a social phenomenon. While climate change is essentially a function of anthropogenic actions; of all species on planet earth, human beings suffer most. Again, the success of strategies of adaptation and mitigation depends much on societal concern, consent and coordination. newlineChanges in climatic conditions will produce adverse impacts on agriculture. Also, marine and freshwater fisheries will be affected. However, the state of nature-based livelihood of the marginalized occupational communities in coastal India in the face of challenges of climate change has not been adequately addressed by the social researchers undertaking investigative studies with respect to India society. |
