Abstract: Interest in biofuels as sustainable options for use in internal combustion newlineengines has considerably increased because of its clean burning nature offering fossilfuel newlineindependence. Diesel engines offer un-paralleled fuel conversion efficiency, torque newlinecapability and durability despite emitting high levels of NOx and Particulate Matter newline(PM) into the atmosphere which are proven to be detrimental to human and newlineenvironmental health. The present study utilizes waste cooking oil and C8 oxygenates newlineadditives in blended form with diesel to power light-duty single cylinder diesel engines newlinethat are widely used in Indian agricultural sector which is modified with common rail newlinedirect injection system. newlineIn the present study, biodiesel produced from the waste cooking oil is tested newlinealong with the diesel and three oxygenates viz., di-n butyl ether (DNBE), 2-ethylhexanol newline(TEH) and 1-octanol (OCT) in a diesel engine equipped with CRDi system. newlineFor this purpose three ternary blends were prepared (a) D80-WCO15-DNBE5 (b) D80- newlineWCO15-TEH5 (c) D80-WCO15-OCT5 and the effects of these oxygenates on the newlinecombustion, performance and emission characteristics was investigated at stock settings newlineand compared with diesel and D80-WCO20 blend. Results revealed that substituting newline5% vol. of WCO with oxygenates was beneficial in improving the combustion newlinecharacteristics of the engine. Among the oxygenates 1-octanol blend showed higher newlineHRR peaks. The BTE slightly dropped for ternary blends in comparison with the newlineWCO20 blend and was still higher than diesel. The NOx emission for ternary blends newlinewas comparatively higher than reference fuels, NOx emission increased by 0.02%, newline1.75% and 4.07% for DNBE, TEH, and OCT blends respectively when compared to newlinediesel. 1-Octanol blend showed 25.77% and 22.03% lower smoke opacity than DNBE newlineand TEH blends respectively. newline
