Abstract: | The progression of metal matrix composites (MMCs) is a milestone in the field of newlineadvanced materials science and technology. Replacing steel alloys with alternate newlineadvanced materials (such as MMCs) having high strength and light weight is in newlinecurrent trend. In the present research, MMCs were developed using standard stir and newlinesqueeze casting process. Aluminum (Al6063) as base metal, reinforcement particles newline(SiC/Gr/Al2O3) were reinforced, for the development of MMCs. The mechanical newlineproperties and the micro structure of the developed composites were experimentally newlineanalyzed. The mechanical properties of MMCs were enhanced with the distribution newlineof particles in the Al alloy. The obtained results showed that the developed newlinecomposites can be used for various engineering applications. newlineThere exists numerous challenges during hole making in super alloys and newlineother advanced materials such as MMCs. The conventional hole making operations newlinesuch as drilling, sometimes become uneconomical because of its low productivity newlineand poor hole quality. It becomes necessary to conceptualize and develop processes newlinewhich are not only economical but also produce high quality holes. Electric newlinedischarge drilling (EDD) process is one such process which combines the effect of newlineelectric discharge machining (EDM) and conventional drilling. The present work newlineconversation attempts to highlight the current advances in the field of electric newlinedischarge drilling of MMCs. The EDD process has been investigated with a newlinedeveloped EDD set-up, which was later installed, as a drilling attachment on the newlineexisting electric discharge machine set-up. The experiments were performed on this newlinemodified EDM set-up having the facility to rotate the electrode for proposed drilling newlinepurpose. This process is mainly a hole making process for electrically conductive newlinedifficult-to-machine materials. This set-up has been developed as a part of this study. |
