Abstract: | Packaging plays a vital role in food safety to sustain the health of the consumers by protecting the food from external contamination and also enhances its shelf-life. For a past few decades, synthetic polymeric materials were used extensively that led to a serious of environmental issues due to the non-biodegradable nature. Biopolymers offer a possible alternative to the synthetic packaging material due to their non-toxic and biodegradability nature. The main drawback of a biopolymer is its poor thermal and mechanical properties and these limitations can be overcome by reinforcing with nano materials. Apart from reinforcement, the nanomaterials also provide antibacterial and antioxidant property of the biopolymer matrix. newlineIn this current research work, Cellulose nanocrystal and Cellulose nanofiber were isolated from renewable resource namely pineapple leaf by acid hydrolysis method. The synthesized Cellulose nanocrystal and Cellulose nanofiber were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (HRTEM). Gelatin biopolymer film was prepared by solution casting method and characterized by FTIR, TGA, and SEM analysis. Different concentrations (1 %, 2 %, 3%, 4%, 5%) of cellulose nanocrystal and cellulose nanofiber reinforced gelatin biopolymer film were prepared. They were characterized by FTIR and SEM followed by the evaluation of mechanical properties, oil permeability, swelling property, water vapor permeability, thickness, grammage, and bulk density to get optimized cellulose nanocrystal/nanofiber reinforced gelatin nanocomposite film. newline |
