Abstract: | In the last few decades, earthquakes struck different parts of the world, and off late not so rare in the Indian subcontinent. The failure of reinforced concrete structures in major earthquakes such as Latur (1993) and Gujarat (2001, 2006, and 2007) caused concern about the performance of beam-column joints. There are considerable numbers of reinforced concrete structures in India that do not meet the requirements of current design standards because of inadequate design or construction errors which demands structural up gradation specially to meet seismic design requirements. The existing reinforced concrete beam-column joints which are designed as per code IS 456:2000 do not meet the ductility requirements as provided in IS 13920:2016 and are vulnerable to earthquake forces and need to be strengthened to improve their seismic performance. Though several experimental studies exist on the behavior of retrofitted beam-column joints, relatively limited work has been reported on the development of a simple, but reliable method that can be adopted by practicing engineers on a daily basis. Similarly, most of the available literature, as well as design guidelines related to the seismic assessment and FRP retrofit of existing RC buildings, have concentrated on the in-plane (2D) response. Thus, there is need for a cost-effective, efficient, and practically viable retrofit solution. Hence the present research work adopted a novel cost-effective retrofitting technique for one-way and two-way exterior beam-column joints with Hybrid FRP (HFRP) laminate newline newline newline |
