In Search of Humanity The Bond That Matters in the Selected Works of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Abstract

When pandemics like Covid-19 hit the world, people undergo a lot of sufferings and start losing their faith and values. At such times, they should try to reconnect with God, nature, and with others. This reconnection would help to understand others and themselves better and to lead a meaningful life. Works Selected for the Study are Purple Hibiscus, Half of a Yellow Sun, Americanah and the short story collection The Thing Around Your Neck. The study is divided into five chapters including introduction and Summation and the main chapters are Search for Identity, Tradition Vs Modernity and Women Empowerment. Introduction gives an overview of the Nigerian literature with special reference to major women writers. Nigerian women writing blossomed with the entry of Flora Nwapa. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is one of the prominent writers who is still contributing to the development of Nigerian Literature through her fiction and prose works. Identity refers to the individual quality of a person when the individual tries to find the meaning of existence. Search for Identity deals with the identity crisis faced by the characters and their struggles to retain their roots, as Adichie says A self that is honest and aware of the equal humanity of other people . Tradition Vs Modernity brings out the conflict between people who hold on to tradition and those who embrace modernity. The role of western education is important in the progressive thinking of people. Women Empowerment brings out Adichie s views on feminism which are different from others . She wants women to be different, progressive, independent and empowered realizing their full potential. Summation sums up the arguments of the previous chapters and points out how Adichie makes her characters understand their own selves in the course of their search for identity and overcome the struggles and understand the need to establish proper relationship with others.
