Abstract: Present research work throws light on the film adaptation theory with reference to Chetan Bhagat s four novels and their four film adaptations respectively. For this experiment, descriptive, conceptual as well as analytical research methodologies were adapted. The relevant information on the present topic, has been gathered from the four novels by Chetan Bhagat and four films adapted from those novels, reference books, websites, Ph. D. thesis, film reviews, interviews with English teachers and a good number of research articles and research papers from renowned national and international journals for the study. newlineThe thesis is an amalgamation of six different chapters like a tree with six flourishing branches. Each chapter is an inseparable part of the whole picture as each one of them assembles connected pieces. First chapter serves as an introduction to the upcoming chapters giving outline of Film Adaptation Theory and its types, adapted films in Bollywood, difference between text of a novel and script of a film, parameters to identify this difference, introduction to the author and his four novels, films adapted from these novels, etc. Next four chapters present a comparative analysis of a novel and its adapted film in the light of selected parameters like theme, story- beginning, middle and end, characterisation, costume, role of sound and music, point of view, flash back, text and script, etc. Through this analysis, the researcher has done a comparison between the four novels of Chetan Bhagat and their film adaptations to understand the difference between the text of a literary work and the script of a film. As per the findings of the study, the researcher has come to the conclusion that novels are better than films. No doubt, films like 3 Idiots, Hello, Kai Po Che! and 2 States are faithful adaptations of the original source novels but it is the language i.e., TEXT of a novel that provides a base to the SCRIPT of a film. The result of this study opens new area of research in the field of adaptation of Indian
