Abstract: With the rapid developments in technology, underwater wireless communication (UWC) has become a fast-growing field, with broad applications in commercial and military water-based applications such as remote control in the off-shore oil industry, pollution monitoring, collection of scientific data from ocean-bottom stations, disaster detection and early warning, national security and underwater surveillance in defense as well as new resource discovery. But UWC using acoustic wave for data transmission over long ranges are affected by the factors such as multi-path propagation, time variations of the channel, low bandwidth, low data rates and strong signal attenuation. Thus, the development of research in the field of acoustic communication has played the most important role. Now-a-days, the ever-increasing demand for bandwidth, efficiency, spatial diversity, and performance of underwater acoustic (UWA) communication has opened doors for the use of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. But when multiple versions of the same signal due to MIMO-OFDM-UWA communication system are received at the receiver side in an underwater environment then it will result in multi- access interference (MAI) due to co-channel interferencee. In such a case, instead of considering the interfering users as background noise at the receiver, multiuser detection (MUD) is used to exploit the structure of their signals to improve the receiver performance. Thus, there is a great challenge to develop efficient methods/ algorithms at the receiver of such underwater communication system to achieve MUD. newline
