Abstract: Background Appendix is a component of gut associated lymphoid tissue Follicular dendritic cells are non migratory population found in primary and secondary follicles of the B cell area of the lymphnodes spleen mucosa associated lyphnodes MALT and Gut associated lymphnodes GALT FDCs play a pivotal role in antigen presentation in immune system Aims and objectives To demonstrate the follicular dendritic cells present in normal and infected appendix To find out the role of germinal centers in humoral immunity in appendix Material and methods Total number of samples 100 75 infected and 25 are normal appendix Samples were divided with different 2 age groups 0 to 20yrs 21 to 40 yrs 41to 60yrs The specimens of human appendix used for study obtained from department of pathology mahatma Gandhi medical college Jaipur All the specimens preserved in 10 formalin solution and immunohistochemistry procedure applied with mouse antihuman monoclonal CD 35 marker using polymer HRP detection system which detect the follicular dendritic cells Results The study shows that the CD35 positive FDCs were present in reticular pattern in the germinal center in most the most of the cases of appendicitis the FDCs were in scattered pattern in mucosa and other layers of appendix The Maximum number of Lymhoid follicles are found in group A 0 20 Yrs Lymphoid follicles decreased in number according to increasing order of age Lymphoid follicles less in number in group c 41to 60yrs Conclusion FDCs are present in the lymphatic follicles in normal appendix and scattered in appendicitis In different age group the histopathology of appendix is variable the large number of lymphoid follicles are present in to appendix in this study the maximum number of lymphoid follicles and germinal centres are present into age group A 0 to 20 yrs and reduced significantly with the advancing age Out of 75 cases of appendicitis the maximum number showing discreet pattern of follicular dendritic cells newline
